This competition is sponsored and run by Redwood Raks World Dance Studio, owned by Shoshanna. It is held at, but separate from the rest of the Redwood Coast Belly Dance Festival (run through Mosaic Productions, a non-profit program of the Ink People Center for the Arts

PRIZES

1st Place: Title of Jewel of the Redwoods, tiara, $150 prize, gift bag, workshop instruction at 2015 festival

2nd Place: tiara, $100 prize, gift bag

3rd Place: tiara, $50 prize, gift bag

All contestants: gift bag and mini-tiara!

 

ENTRY

Send an email to shoshanna@shoshannaland.com with your performing name, legal name, address/phone/email/website, a brief bio about you and a photo. $25 entry fee may be sent in a check to "Redwood Raks" or sent via PayPal to dance@shoshannaland.com. If we receive more than 10 applicants, we will have a waiting list.

 

TIMES & DETAILS:

  • Competition will happen as part of the Redwood Coast Belly Dance Festival from 5-7pm on Sat, Oct 4th, 2014.
  • There is only one category, and it is open to all styles of dance. Dancers should be at an intermedate / advanced / professional level.
  • There is a 7 minute time limit, and dancers must be checked in and music must be submitted by 3pm via CD or mp3 player (only thing on CD or in playlist; all edits must be done ahead of time... no fade-outs or changing tracks).
  • Costumes, music and movement choices should be appropriate for an all-ages crowd.
  • Use of props is neither encouraged nor discouraged. Zils, canes, swords, veils, fans, trays..... anything is fine.
  • Choreography and improvisation are both welcome. Freshness and depth of musiality and interaction between dancer, audience and music will be the most important.

 

JUDGING:

Judges will be noting on a scale of 1-10 their impressions on the following aspects:

  • OVERALL

Overall enjoyment , Entrance & Exit, Use of Dance Dynamics (stage space, level, speed, direction, variety, etc)

  • TECHNICAL ASPECTS

Impression of: Technical skill level

  • EMOTIONAL ASPECTS

Costume, music & movements appropriate for event and that they all go well together & make sense for the presentation, depth of musical interpretation, "freshness" (feeling of ease & spontaneity), poise & polish, connection with audience, maturity of dance style.
